How to know if your windshield can be repaired or needs to be replaced:

  • If the crack in the windshield runs less than 13 inches or the chip is smaller than 3 inches in diameter.
  • If the chip or crack has not penetrated into the inner layer of the glass. As long as you can not feel it from the interior of the car, the windshield could possibly be repaired instead of replaced.
  • If the chip or crack is more than 6 inches from the edge of the windshield.

What to expect when repairing your windshield chip or crack:

  • After you've confirmed your chip or crack is a good candidate for a repair instead of a replacement, you can begin repairing the damage.
  • First use a safety pin or a push pin to gently remove the excess broken glass in the chip.
  • Then you need to clean the area so your tools and the glass resin can adequately adhere to the windshield.
  • At this point the next steps depend greatly on the type of chip repair kit you are using.  You can browse and buy chip repair kits here.
  • Follow the instructions from the chip repair kit
  • Clean up any glass resin that may be left over from your chip repair kit.
